In the Middle Ages, the former castle was the regional administrative center of the Bishopric of Würzburg and also a border fortress to the areas of the Bishopric of Fulda. For a long time it was assumed that the castle was no longer used after it was destroyed in the 13th century. Archaeological investigations have meanwhile revealed construction phases that can be dated to the 16th century. The subsequent decay caused the complex to fall into oblivion. It was not until 1897 that forest master Fuchs discovered the remains of the wall while laying out a wood removal path and had them uncovered.

Steineck castle ruins - very arduous ascent across the terrain - very steep - no path - moss-covered stones at the top - small remains of walls - hollows - no idea what the castle should have looked like. Wikipedia - Steineck Castle, also known as Steineckke or Nordeck, is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle at 350 m above sea level. NN near Steinach in the municipality of Burglauer in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld in Bavaria. The castle is located to the east of the Franconian Saale on a mountain spur protruding from the steep slope. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1201. According to tradition, the castle burned down on Christmas Eve. The castle was divided into a bailey and a main castle. In front of the outer bailey was a deep moat that can still be seen today. Wall remains on the front of the main castle suggest a shield wall. Only small remains of walls and traces of ramparts and ditches have been preserved from the castle complex.

In the 16th century, an iron smelter was built on the Holzberg by the von Thüngen noble family. In 1954, the hunting lodge was bought by the current owners, the Meinschäfer family, and converted into a restaurant with guest rooms. In the cozy dining room, modeled on a knight's hall, you can still sit romantically in the light of petroleum lamps.
