A beautiful salt lake, separated from the sea by a narrow passage. In the center of the lake a small island with the ruins, unfortunately not visible from the coast, of Clohane Castle. From here the path to Knockomagh starts, very steep but with a 360° view of the entire valley.

Nice, but rather unspectacular lake near the beach. We saw almost no waterfowl. But there are some benches and really good hiking trails.

Barley Lake is a real insider tip in the Caha Mountains, nestled in a rugged, boggy landscape. The hike here takes you through a piece of almost untouched nature that has existed since the last Ice Age. The lake, surrounded by steep hills, appears tranquil and mysterious—as if time has stood still. If you set out, you should pack sturdy shoes, as the path is not always easy to find, and in wet weather it can get muddy. What I particularly liked was the isolation of the place. Up here, you hardly meet a soul, and you can concentrate fully on the landscape and the clear, dark lake. If you have a little sense of direction, you can even walk around the lake. You'll be rewarded with new views time and again—over the lake itself and all the way to Kerry. After rain, the ground here is often boggy. Pack some dry socks just in case you sink a little deeper. However, the view and the tranquility that Barley Lake exudes more than make up for this small challenge. The lake reminds you that nature has been carving its own path here for thousands of years. For me, it was a grounding moment—far from crowds and everyday life. It's a place where you should take the time to pause and simply feel the power of nature.

Lough Hyne is truly something special. On my way to the lake I passed through the dense forest of the Knockomagh Woods Trail, where the green of the trees and the chirping of birds cover the hikers like a thick blanket. A quiet, almost mystical place. When you leave the path and suddenly see the clear waters of Lough Hyne in front of you, the landscape opens up in a completely new way. The lake, which is considered a safe place to swim even in rough conditions due to its salt water supply, attracts not only hikers but also swimmers who bathe in the protected waters here all year round.

The view of Lough Akeen is one of those moments that stays etched in your memory. The short detour off the main path takes you to a hill from which you can see both the deep blue lake and the vastness of the Atlantic. It's a small effort that is more than worth it - after just a few meters you are rewarded with a panorama that makes you pause. The lake nestles in the rocky landscape, surrounded by hills that slope down to the sea in gentle waves. On clear days the water looks almost like a mirror, while on the horizon the mountains and the coast merge. There is no better opportunity to take a break, take a deep breath and enjoy nature in all its tranquility. The path here is well signposted, but the last section requires a little surefootedness. The rocks can be slippery, especially after rainfall, so good footwear is recommended.

This hike takes you along narrow paths through a landscape that is impressive in every season. The path winds through hilly terrain, past two loughs, and offers you wide views over both bays. The combination of the lush green of the meadows and the deep blue of the Atlantic in the distance is particularly fascinating. On rainy days, it can quickly become challenging here. The narrow paths turn into small streams, so waterproof footwear is an absolute must. A pair of dry socks in your backpack certainly won't hurt either. But it is precisely the changing weather conditions that make the hike a very special experience. In wind and rain, the landscape unfolds a wild, almost mystical atmosphere that completely captivates you. And then there are the views. Breathtaking panoramas open up again and again - sometimes of the glittering loughs, sometimes of the rugged coasts. The sheep that graze everywhere here accompany you kindly on your way while you breathe in the fresh sea air. For me, the hike was a real highlight. It may be a bit slippery in places, but it's worth the effort. Especially on sunny days, you can fully enjoy the incredible expanses and the interplay of land and water. If you're looking for a hike that offers seclusion and nature experiences, you've come to the right place.

Glandore - a picturesque spot on the coast that surprised me on my tour along the Wild Atlantic Way. The calm waters of the harbor are a clear blue, and if you're lucky you can even see the resident seals playing. During my break there, overlooking the water and the rolling hills in the background, I just let the moment take hold. The narrow streets and peaceful atmosphere practically invite you to get off and visit one of the pubs in the village. A cold drink in hand, legs stretched out - there is no better way to break up a bike ride. What makes this place special is its proximity to nature. Further out in the bay, whales, dolphins and sometimes sharks are said to frolic. Even though I didn't see any myself, just the thought of it gives the place something magical. If you pass through here, treat yourself to a little time out and let the vastness of the bay work its magic on you.
