The collection of open spaces around Readington Township is an effort to preserve at least 12,000 acres despite the projected growth in the area. As of now a number of areas are designated as open spaces and have varying amenities such as trails, picnic sites, and lakes.

Cushetunk Mountain Nature Preserve is a 380-acre nature preserve that is directly east of Round Valley Recreation Area and Round Valley Reservoir. You can catch views of the reservoir from some trails in the preserve.

Covering 2,350 acres and reaching depths of about 180 feet, Round Valley Reservoir is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Cushetunk Mountains. It's important to note that swimming is only permitted in designated areas.
