A monument to a great tradition in Forchheim.

The sculpture in the picture is a bronze statue of an Aischgrund mirror carp by the sculptor Reinhard Eiber. It stands by the steps leading down to the Wiesent River in Forchheim's market square. The sculpture is a symbol of Forchheim's long and important fishing tradition, which dates back to the late Middle Ages. Carp farming is typical of the region, and the fish is an important local product.

The fish are kept in the fish boxes after being caught. This keeps them fresh until they are sold or eaten. Because they are in flowing water, they can't burrow into the mud and therefore don't taste like mud.
