Slipway into Gjógv Bay.

According to the guidebook, Lake Toftavatn is a beautiful and popular hiking area. We are quickly convinced and decide to walk around the lake. The hike around the lake is relatively easy and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The path is well-maintained and mostly a gravel road or paved path, leading us through a diverse landscape, including heathland, moorland, and wetlands. We pass several marshy areas that provide habitat for various bird species. The path winds over gentle hills, continually offering new perspectives of the lake and the surrounding area. There are several spots along the path that are perfect for a photo stop and offer panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding valleys.

The village's name, "Gjógv," means "ravine" or "gorge" in Faroese. This refers to a 200-meter-long, seawater-filled ravine that leads from the village to the sea. This ravine serves as a natural harbor for smaller boats. In rough seas, boats must be pulled out of the water via a ramp to protect them from the surf. The ravine is an impressive natural spectacle, especially when the waves crash against the basalt walls.

Gjógv is a picturesque and remote village known for its tranquil beauty and unique natural features. First documented in 1584, Gjógv likely existed much earlier. For a long time, it relied on fishing and the sale of dried and salted fish. Although its population has declined significantly in recent decades (as of January 2025, there were 19 permanent residents), the village retains its historic charm and offers glimpses into a bygone way of life. Highly recommended: the journey itself goes through spectacular scenery. The village with its rugged Atlantic coast is even more so. The high waves crash wildly against the cliffs. If you climb up the rocks, you can see the puffins in summer
