The castle built by the Hamdanids (an Arab dynasty of northern Iraq active between 890 and 1004) in the 10th century, is 1 km from the town and is located at about 1200m above sea level. The Great (Ulu) Mosque of Mardin is one of the architectural examples of the Artuklu period and the symbol of Mardin with its dome and minaret. According to the documents it was built with two minarets, the inscription (kufik, a style of Islamic calligraphy) on the square base of the only existing minaret of the mosque indicates the construction date of 1176 but the present minaret was built in 1888/1889. Some Syriac writers say that it was made from the bell tower of a church. The mosque reflects the basic features of the architecture of the Artuklu period of the 12th century. Currently, the mosque is open for worship.
