Directly on the Limes

Nice place to stay

There's a bit of vegetation at the summit cross, with no all-round view. But the hiker's book helps you overcome it. Writing a saying in it is a matter of honor.

The remains of the Roman signal tower on Bad Nauheim's local mountain are part of the Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On the maps the mountain is called Wellenberg. A walking route is called a circuit around the Heidelbeerkopf.

Today's Johnannisturm once stood as a bell tower on a church that was presumably destroyed in the turmoil of the Reformation. According to a chronicle, the tower was almost destroyed in 1732 when Nauheim citizens were looking for building materials for their houses there. 90 years later, the ruins again assumed important significance: in the surveying of the Taunus and the Wetterau. The surveyors made the tower their measuring mark. These geodesists had the building increased in 1866 so that it would continue to tower over the trees. With the expansion, it was converted into a viewing tower.

The tower is a very nice reconstruction of a Roman watchtower. You can enter it at any time and you also have a good view from the top.

The Romans also appreciated the Johannesberg, even if it was called differently at the time
