The mountain gets its color from Navajo Sandstone, which is the same type of rock found in nearby Zion National Park. Over time, wind and water have shaped this sandstone into beautiful cliffs, canyons, and unique rock formations.

From a 221 meter high observation deck, we enjoy the breathtaking view of Lake Mead, the Colorado River and the numerous valleys and gorges that surround the dam. The Hoover Dam is about as high as a 60-story building and was the tallest dam in the world when it was built in 1935. During our visit, we have the opportunity to go inside the dam. We walk through the original construction tunnels and visit the observation deck with a view of a pressure pipeline and 8 of the commercial generators in the Nevada Powerhouse.

The SARA in SARA Park is short for, Special Activities and Recreation Area, and it definitely lives up to its name. In addition to the usual hiking and biking trails you might expect, you'll also find BMX and motocross tracks, an RC airplane and helicopter field, rodeo grounds, shooting & archery ranges, baseball & soccer fields, an RC car race track, an actual racetrack (Havasu 95 Speedway), and a dog park. And if that's not enough, the city has already approved plans to expand the park to offer even more space for different activities. Needless to say, there's something for everyone here.

You may have seen Ghost Bikes in other locations around the world, as they are often erected as memorials to cyclists who were killed by motorists. This trail is dedicated to the memory of two local cyclists that were struck on the shoulder of the highway near SARA Park. It's a solemn reminder to all of how precious and fragile life can be.

Hualapai Mountain Park is the oldest park in Mohave County, the beginnings of which can be traced to the Civilian Conservation Corps' work in the 1930s. There are miles of trails to explore, including a hike to the summit of Hualapai Mountain which reaches nearly 8,500 feet. You can also stay at a campground or splash out and book a night or two at the Hualapai Mountain Resort. This is a great place to visit any time of year, but due to elevation you'll want to check road conditions during winter.

The Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area is set between the Paiute Wilderness and Beaver Dam Wilderness. A day-use fee of $2 is required, or you can stay at one of the campsites for an overnight fee of $8. There are a number of trails starting directly from the parking/camping areas, as well as many more along Cedar Pocket Road that heads north out of the Recreation Area.

This section of the Virgin River flows through a gorge and has a very seasonal flow. During the spring runoff season, or after a summer monsoon, the river may be impassable, while at the end of Summer into Autumn the water level will be much lower.

Cedar Pocket Sinkhole (aka Beaver Dam Sinkhole) was created when underground water eroded the soft gypsum away which lead to the mine collapsing. The way down is quite steep and the footing is loose so be cautious if you decide to walk down for a closer look.
