The Saflisch Pass, at over 2,500 meters high, can be reached by bike, but it's a real challenge. From Binn, you have to climb over 1,100 meters in altitude over a distance of about 14 kilometers. The higher you go, the wilder and quieter it becomes. A fantastic crossing that demands a lot but is equally rewarding!

The stone eagle is still the symbol of the Simplon Pass today. As a symbol of vigilance, it was created to commemorate the "Watch on the Simplon" by the 11th Border Brigade during the Second World War. The eagle is over 9m high and is made of roughly hewn stones. It was built according to the plans of the architect and sculptor Erwin Friedrich Baumann von Faulensee, Spiez. Based on his consideration that the solar radiation has an intense effect at an altitude of over 2000 m above sea level and that the free-standing solid masonry potentiates the heat towards the core and that the outer layers could have a destructive effect if the outer layers subsequently cooled down, he arranged the main focus of the concrete core an accessible cavity.
