A beautiful village church in a somewhat unusual design - in the form of a tower -

This observation post is located right next to a pond, so the viewing windows are very small. Unfortunately, vegetation here and there prevents perfect observation, but if you have enough patience, you can watch the birds up close. On the outside there are plenty of information boards about all the inhabitants of this landscape.

Vacha's name goes back to a settlement on both sides of the Werra, where fishing was carried out using weirs and traps. When the area was first mentioned as part of the old Via Regia trade route, it was probably only sparsely populated. A real town has existed here since 1180. However, its location on the famous trade route not only brought Vacha a significant boom in crafts and trade, but also a steep decline in times of war. In the Thirty Years' War alone, troops used the trade route and left Vacha badly destroyed and plundered. Only 14 families remained in the town. Napoleon also retreated via the Via Regia after losing the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. In Vacha there are countless information boards that have been researched with great care and give a good impression of life there. They tell stories from everyday life and about all the celebrities who passed through Vacha or came from here. So you can spend some time here. At the market square you can also enjoy hot meals all day long in a fast food restaurant serving Greek, Indian and Turkish cuisine.

The town hall of Vacha is also called "Widemark". Kaspar von Widemarkter had the building constructed in 1613. After the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig, Napoleon I also took up quarters here while retreating from the Russian troops. The building has only been used as a town hall since 1911. https://www.thueringen.info/vacha-die-widemark.html

The church, probably built before 1500 as a defensive tower and later used as a sacred space, is open from April to October from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. https://www.ekmd.de/kirche/kirchenkreise/eisenach-gerstungen/gerstungen/untersuhl/rundkirche/
