The Niederburg is a well-maintained and restored complex above Kranichfeld. There is a good view over the place and the Ilm valley, a café, a rose garden and a falconry. The short ascent via Schloßgasse alone is atmospheric.

The Oberschloss Kranichfeld is a renaissance castle of the former Princely House of Reuss, above the town of Kranichfeld in Thuringia, which emerged from an older castle complex. It is owned by the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation.

The castle was built on a hill north of the village, probably to protect the old trade route to Bohemia, in the 12th century. In 1248 Tonndorf Castle was attested, which is located on a hill about 0.6 km north of the village and can be seen from afar through the striking keep (Wikipedia).
