The chambers of the rock caves are a special attraction near Buchfart. They were already in use before the 10th century and the complex probably served as a refuge. The 478-meter-high "Weimarer Hausberg" was the favorite hunting ground of the Weimar princes. Between 1706 and 1711, Duke Wilhelm Ernst had a hunting lodge built as a simple three-wing complex on the foundations of a canons' foundation founded around 1084 and later an Augustinian monastery in Ettersburg. After her son Carl August came to power in 1775, Anna Amalia chose Ettersburg Palace as her summer residence. A handsome "sensitive" park landscape was created around the buildings. The ageing tulip tree in front of the rifle hall is still impressive today.
