Very beautiful area

Built in 1647-49 according to plans by Matthias Staudt as a late Renaissance palace for Elector Philipp Christoph von Sötern; restored in the Baroque style by Christian Kretzschmar after a fire in the 18th century. The foyer features 16 terracottas, made by Villeroy & Boch on behalf of Ludwig II for Herrenchiemsee Palace.

Berg Castle, built on a hill above the town of Nennig, consists of two connected former moated castles. The lower castle is privately owned and is gradually falling into disrepair, while the upper castle, converted into a palace during the Renaissance, houses a hotel, a restaurant, and a casino. The upper castle, incidentally, was almost completely destroyed in World War II, rebuilt by the Saarland in the 1950s, and used as a school camp for about 30 years. Ziegelberg Castle is a historic castle in Mettlach, built by Edmund von Boch in the French neo-Renaissance style of the 19th century. In its history it served as a children's holiday home, ceramics museum and restaurant, but is currently only used by a few clubs and is otherwise empty. The municipality of Mettlach is looking for new investors and usage concepts through a transparent expression of interest process. The aim is to develop a permanently viable and future-proof concept for the castle, the gatehouse and the outbuildings. The process should take into account the diverse historical and architectural significance of the castle.

Awesome trail. Narrow with lots of switchbacks and some crossings almost on the edge and with rocks and stones. We rode the rough track downhill.
