St. Mary’s Church of Lappee is a unique natural and cultural site of the Saimaa Geopark, located in central Lappeenranta. Built in 1794 by Juhana Salonen, it is the only wooden double cruciform church from the 18th century in Finland. The church is surrounded by an old cemetery and offers insight into traditional craftsmanship and regional history. It's easily accessible by bike via city streets, making it a convenient cultural stop for cyclists.

Lappeenranta is a lively city in South Karelia, located by Lake Saimaa, and offers a great mix of urban services and natural attractions for cyclists. The historic fortress area, harbour promenade, and sandy beaches are all worth a stop. From the city, you can access several well-maintained cycling routes, including stretches of the Saimaa Cycle Tour. The terrain is mostly flat with some gentle hills, and surfaces range from smooth asphalt to light gravel, suitable for trekking or cross bikes. It’s a good place to stock up on supplies or enjoy a proper meal before heading into more quiet rural areas.

Hämmäauteensuo is a rare and protected bog area in South Karelia, offering a unique nature experience just off the cycling route. You can walk on duckboards across the marsh to reach a lean-to shelter, ideal for a peaceful picnic break—just remember to bring your own food and water. Cycling on the duckboards is not allowed or safe, so it’s best to leave your bike locked securely at the road. The area is part of Finland’s national bog protection programme and is open for berry and mushroom picking. Stick to the marked duckboards to protect the fragile environment and ensure a safe visit.

The Saimaa Canal is a major waterway connecting Lake Saimaa to the Gulf of Finland, stretching from Lappeenranta to Vyborg. It's a popular cycling route thanks to the scenic towpaths and light traffic roads that run alongside it. The canal features several locks, and you can often watch boats being raised or lowered, especially in summer. There is a unique self-winding bike ferry that allows cyclists to cross the waterway manually. It’s a small platform on a cable system, operated by pulling yourself across using a hand-crank or rope. This ferry adds a bit of adventure to your ride, but rememeber, the crossing is at your own risk.

A nice bridge with an impressive view of the canal. The cycling roads are separate from the normal roads, making it a safe place to cross the canal without a hassle.
