The Roman Bridge of Salamanca forms part of the Silver Route (Vía de la Plata), which connected Mérida with Astorga. Although its origins are Roman, dating from the 1st century AD, only the fifteen arches closest to the city are from this period; the other eleven underwent several reconstructions as a result of flooding of the Tormes River.

The project was led by the architect Alberto de Churriguera, followed by his nephew Manuel de Lara Churriguera and was completed by Andrés García de Quiñones in 1755. Located in the centre of the city, it forms an irregular quadrilateral with arcades, with three floors on each façade, presided over by the Town Hall. In the Royal Pavilion, the effigy of King Ferdinand III The Saint stands out and the medallions on the spandrels of its arches represent Spanish monarchs. In the south pavilion, or San Martín in the medallions we see illustrious military men or conquerors, while in the Petrineros pavilion the figures in the medallions are cultural figures.
