It's a beautiful canal but what is amazing is that it runs all the way to Brecon

The white noise from the crashing water makes this a perfect place to tune out of the world. Unique place!

Great ride, can get tight with height and width on some bridges but in all a mostly paved cycle through Cwmbran with light gravel down to Newport and up past Pontypool, I’d recommend carrying a spare inner tube or have slime tubes installed and spare as sometimes the odd bramble is on the track after trimming!

Good terrain, easy to ride and flowing.

The weir spans the River Taff, which flows directly through the heart of South Wales. It's a nice place to stop and refuel with picnic benches and a peaceful atmosphere.

The footbridge over the Taff here was built in the 1980s by Cardiff University in tandem with development of nearby student accommodation. Engineering students were involved in the bridge project.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal links up a small network of canals, running 35 navigable miles (56km) through the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park for the majority of its length.

Great viewpoint up and down the river and the weir. Cyclist's have to push!

Built in the 1980s by engineering students from Cardiff University, the suspension footbridge gives a well-used route across the River Taff between Bute Park and Pontcanna Fields.

Not one for the weekend but will get you from Newport into the Brecons in no time at all. Either take the canal all the way to Brecon for the north ascent of the Gap, or turn left at Talybont for the Blaen-y-glyn climbs, or get off at Abergavenny for the Black Mountains. Gravel bike recommended but doable on 25mm tyres in the dry, at least as far as Gilwern.

Can be very muddy off track but offering some great views of local habitats and wildlife Birdlife abounds, aside from the obvious resident waterbirds, recent highlights include Grey and Pied Wagtails, Buzzards, Red Kite, Sparrowhawk, Stock Dove, Raven, Jay, Kingfisher (mostly just flying through) Nuthatch and Greenfinch, Chaffinch with Swifts, Swallows, House and Sand Martins foraging. Insect life very good as expected. The adjacent Ty Coch woodland is worth visiting but on foot only, looking out over the open fields and copses to the South and West can be productive for more unusual species like Kestrel and Pergrine foraging or passing through.

The pretty Radyr Weir spans over the River Taff and is currently working as a hydropower scheme, providing energy locally. You may find wild salmon and sea trout near the weir, as well as cormorants and grey herons.

Craig Llysfaen, also known as Lisvane Graig, is a prominent hill of 265 m above sea level, overlooking Cardiff, some 7 miles north of the city centre.
