What a gem this place is. Homemade food, great staff, a warm welcome and very popular with lovely views of the canal

This is a great section of canal. We were a team of six cyclists doing the LEJOG but it still wasn't too busy. Nice ambience along the canal and through the dock area.

This bridge is located along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and connects the Purton area to the wider canal system. It is a swing bridge with a control room operated by a keeper to manage its movements. The Purton site also features a historic boat graveyard, where old ship hulls were used to reinforce the canal embankment,

well worth a stop to refuel

while mostly rideable, the bit between Purton and Slimbridge can be a bit rough and ready and I struggled on my road bike, but then I was a bit silly taking it here in the first place.

"Splatt Bridge" is one of eighteen bridges on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal. Some of the bridges have classically styled keeper's cottages with Greek columns and pediment.

A scenic stretch of the ride alongside the River Severn. A great place to spot vast flocks of birds over the water.

The Anchor Inn serves drinks, snacks and traditional pub food. Open 11:30 - 22:00.

The Pilot Inn at Hardwicke offers traditional pub food with a nice view. Open Mon to Thurs 12:00 - 22:00, Fri and Sat 12:00 - 23:00 and Sun 12:00 - 21:00. Food served Mon to Fri 12:00 - 14:30 and 17:00 - 20:30, Sat 12:00 - 21:00 and Sun 12:00 - 19:30.

Easily manageable on a rugged bike in winter and just about any bike when it's dry.

Road too small to share between cyclist and pedestrians

Awesome little wooden cabin cafe - with an outside shack for coffee, snacks & ice cream 🍨- plus a main cafe which does full sit down meals. Great for brunch!
