Fabulous Trail! A 7 mile (11km) mainly traffic-free route from Bovey Tracey to Moretonhampstead follows the dismantled railway line through the National Trust Parke Estate and past the beautiful picturesque village of Lustleigh.

Moretonhampstead to Bovey Tracey os a great, smooth off road trail. Best avoided during school holiday week ends if speed is your thing but easy to cruise at 20mph when it's empty.

6月 12, 2024, Revelation Kiln at Devonmoor Art Pottery
Bottle kiln at Applewoods Factory. Bottle kiln. Probably late 19th or early 20th century, re-erected on this site for the Devonmoor Art Pottery in 1932 or 1934. Yellow brick, the flue distinctly darker in colour. Square base reinforced with railway rails. It is believed to be a Revelation kiln brought here from Candy's Pottery, Heathfield, Bovey Tracey. The kiln lies at the north-east end of the factory, behind a low range of buildings fronting the road to Ilsington village. The Devonmoor Art Pottery was founded in 1922. The factory is marked "Old Foundry" on the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map of 1905. Source: Sites and Monuments Register, County Hall, Exeter. Listing NGR: SX8059275102

Yellow brick, the flue distinctly darker in colour. Square base reinforced with railway rails. It was confirmed by Mr Hope the son of the founder of the Devonmoor Art Pottery in Liverton as a revelation kiln; similar in shape to a bottle kiln but had a different function.

6月 10, 2024, Islington Manor Ruins
lsington manor is recorded in the doomsday book of 1086 and was one of six mediaeval manors in the parish in the 13th century. it was held from the Beaumonts earls of Devon by their tenants. the Dynim's records show the Dynem's were benefactors of St. Michael's church and founders of a chantry in the north concept of the church. the blocked up doorway of the transcept laid out to the manor garden when the last lord Dynham died in 1501 here. John Ford and Emily bought two of these three parts and his son George a further one. It is George who is thought to have rebuilt the house into its characteristic Elizabeth and e-shaped style. one of George's sons was John Ford, a well-known dramatist by the 17th century. during the ownership of sir Henry ford MP for Tiverton, his estate was again fragmented. Records show that by 1829 a manor house was in two ownerships. The central range of the building had disappeared and the two wings were little more than cottages. By the mid-19th century. these were being used for agricultural storage in 1852. description of the manor describes it as "the remains of a mouldering mansion went fast and venerable which form a very pleasing object from the precinct of the church, the tourists and ponder on the dim prestige of the Harris million and bracketed and bayed all over. they're all that there left is a miscuit and phantom of the past" In 1871. part of the site was sold to the vicar and churchwardens of Islington to provide plans for the current school. Many of the original dress stones from the manor house can be seen around the village where they're being reused in buildings and walls.

One of my favourite spots on Dartmoor, the village has real character, good ice cream, coffee and pizza.

12月 28, 2023, New Start of the Red Trail, Haldon Forest Park
Haldon Forest Park opened the new start to the red trail in mid December 2023 and it's fantastic. It's packed gravel with berms at the start, then splits in two. Take the right 'short cut' to cut the entire red in two (or take it to ride back to the start and do the new section again) or stay left to carry on along the new bit and then get onto the usual red. This new section is nowhere near as challenging as the main red, but it's super fast and fun. As it spits you out on the fire track after a short distance, it's great for kids too, who can have a great time on this punchy gravel but bail before the red gets hairy. The way it's set up means it's easy to only do this bit, ride back to the start, and do it again and again.

Fingle Bridge is a 17th-century stone bridge over the River Teign. It's a useful crossing point linking some of the enjoyable gravel riverside trails in the area. The riverside paths on both sides of the river make great running loops. The Fingle Bridge hotel is also a good pit stop, set in idyllic surroundings.
