Great view and well worth the slightly steep muddy ascent.

A super cool train sculpture that is on The Strawberry Line, which is a super cool cycleway in itself.

This is a really enjoyable ride but the bike gates are a pain with straight handlebars.

Black Down is the highest hill in the Mendips with Beacon Batch the highest spot point at 1,066 feet (325 m). There are a good set of bridleways in the area, many with gravelly surfaces suitable for gravel or touring bikes. The summit ridge path is particularly good, with amazing views of the Mendips and north towards Bristol.

Next to the large halls and buildings of "Thatchers Cider" (https://www.thatcherscider.co.uk/) is the "Railway Inn". Ideal for a rest stop on the Strawberry Line.

Nice traffic free route with lots of places to stop for refreshments along the way. Recommend the bakery at Winscombe. Sadly, the numerous bike gates along the route are a pain if you're on a mountain/hybrid bike as they are too narrow.

At 325m high this is the highest point in the Mendips. It's a great summit with an ancient tumuli and trig point at the top. The ridge line trail stretching to the west from the summit offers wonderful fast running with awesome views in all directions. You can link the summit on a run from Cheddar, Burrington Combe or one of the local towns or villages.

Although this section is on the road it's still fun on a mountain bike. The surface is good and it's a classic road bike climb so expect to get overtaken by skinny tyres and lots of cars, but the scenery is well worth the effort. Look out for birds of prey, goats and rock climbers on some of the tough sport or trad test pieces. There are plenty of off-road trails you can use to get up or down the gorge from Cheddar to the top so you only need to ride this in one direction.

The Cheddar Gorge climb truly is epic. With towing cliffs, feral goats hopping above and ethereal light, it’s wonderful. As others have said, it’s not as hard as you might expect but does last a while. If you’re on a gravel or hybrid bike, you can continue along a gravel trail just before the road turns to national speed limit, which is exceptionally beautiful and continues right to the very tip of the gorge.

I've cycled down and up here many times and always enjoyed it. Its not as hard as you might think, only a few steep sections and their over quickly. Its also worth it for the scenery, which is just amazing. Cheddar itself is full of cafes, so plenty of choice for coffee & cake stops. Its a popular place of course, so expect it to be busy with cars, cyclists, motorbikes etc on a summer weekend.

The descent of Cheddar Gorge is one of the easiest bits of any ride, but is just reward for making it up there in the first place.
