Taranto's old town lies on an island between the Mare Piccolo and Mare Grande, connected to the mainland by only two bridges. Many people here still make their living from fishing and the oyster beds of the Mare Piccolo. The sea is present everywhere, even in the paintings of street artists.

The enormous Ponte Girevole swing bridge is the symbol of the Apulian city of Taranto (Tarent) and was built to connect the old town with the new town. Inaugurated by Admiral Ferdinando Acton on May 22, 1887, the bridge spans a navigable canal 400 meters long and 73 meters wide, connecting the Mar Grande with the Mar Piccolo.
