Ride past the cafe and around the back in between the caf and the bike shop. Hang your bike in the rail and there is an outdoor hatch to beat the indoor queues. There’s also a drinking water tap to fill up before the rest of your ride.

This location is a steep climbing section with loads of switchbacks. As you rise to elevated points the views of Bassenthwaite Lake are brilliant. You can see for miles around in between the trees on the edges of the double tracks

An image above shows the lighting system switched on, however for one reason or another, it was off as I passed through on an overcast day. Another rider oncoming without lights (like me) was barely visible in the middle of the tunnel. Mercifully, we'd already spotted one another entering. If you have an urge to read your phone/navigation device on a similarly gloomy day while the tunnel lighting system is switched off, my advice would be to do so before you enter the tunnel. You're going to need 100% attention if there's traffic ahead!

At the layby there's a fabulous view of Bassenthwaite Lake, the fourth-largest among the lakes in the Lake District. The River Derwent serves as both its primary inflow and outflow, ultimately emptying into the Irish Sea at Workington.

A wonderful family cycling route, perfect for balance bikes and small cyclsists. Avoid between 9 and 10am on a Saturday morning as this trail is used for Park Run.

More a picnic site than a bronze age monument, the standing stones with their commanding view over Skiddaw are impressive nonetheless. They are inscribed with the words, 'Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees' by John Muir.
