"When the opportunity arose at the end of the 1990s to acquire the site of a former Royal Bavarian ironworks (first documented in 1411) with an adjoining Jurassic limestone quarry in the picturesque Altmühl Valley, the artist and his wife Camilla did not hesitate. They acquired the 23,000 square meter abandoned facility and restored the entire complex with its various disused halls and buildings. The architecture of the buildings dates back to the 1830s and is a listed building. Here, he realized his dream of displaying the meter-high steel sculptures in an open-air museum setting. Today, rust-covered sculptures weighing tons stand on the terraced stone plateaus against the dramatic backdrop of the quarry's rock face. In April 2013, a large exhibition hall for sculptures was also opened on the site. The exhibition hall is Germany's The largest privately owned hall. The hall's floor is designed to support a weight of 100 tons per square meter. This is a prerequisite for making Lechner's sculptures tangible indoors. Comparable conditions can only be found at the Tate Modern in London or the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Comments from experts are correspondingly appreciative. "This is world-class," says Munich gallery owner Walter Storms. On one of the upper plateaus of the sculpture park stands the so-called Glass House (formerly the foundry's model workshop). Installed today is the unique work "Geteilte Zeitteilung" (Divided Time Division), consisting of 28 steles, each weighing one ton. In order to present Lechner's graphic work in focused exhibitions, a former cowshed and hayloft were converted into the so-called Paper House. For safety reasons, visits to the Lechner Sculpture Park, the temporary exhibition in the Paper House, and the exhibition hall are only possible as part of guided tours.
