The former Auwallenburg station of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German Reichsbahn) was opened on July 10, 1895, at the same time as the Kleinschmalkalden–Brotterode section. This railway line was a branch line in Thuringia, originally built and operated by the Schmalkalder Kreisbahn (Small Railway), under the auspices of the Schmalkalden district. It connected the Schmalkalden–Kleinschmalkalden railway line with Brotterode in Kleinschmalkalden. From April 1, 1949, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German Reichsbahn) had sole control over the line. On December 14, 1964, the Auwallenburg–Brotterode section was closed and dismantled. Ore was loaded in Auwallenburg, while passenger transport between Pappenheim and Auwallenburg was provided by rail replacement services as early as 1965. This finally ended on March 17, 1968. In 1986, the tracks to Brotterode were re-laid to connect a coal-fired power plant in Brotterode. With the political change in the GDR, the power plant was shut down in 1990. Since then, there have been annual special trains to the Auwallenburg loading station. Attempts by a private railway company to restore scheduled passenger service on the line from Schmalkalden to the Auwallenburg loading station in 1996 failed. Freight traffic between Kleinschmalkalden and Auwallenburg was discontinued on January 31, 1994. Finally, the railway lines, including the Schmalkalden–Kleinschmalkalden line, were dismantled in 2001/02. Today, the railway line cycle path, the Mommelstein Cycle Path, has been built on part of the former line.
