South of the castle is a beautiful castle pond. The castle in Winsen was first mentioned in documents in 1299 and was probably built around 1230. Winsen Moated Castle is the most important landmark of the town of Winsen (Luhe) in Lower Saxony. It was built on oak piles, was first documented in 1277, and has a history spanning over 700 years.
