Lüneburg has a great old town with beautiful half-timbered houses

The Lüneburg water district with the Ilmenau, the pretty medieval buildings and the wooden crane is probably the most beautiful and well-known part of Lüneburg. For people who like to take pictures, there are wonderful photo opportunities here. But there is also a lot on offer in terms of gastronomy, nowhere else in Lüneburg is the density of restaurants as high as here in the Wasserviertel.

The pretty, old salt town of Lüneburg is always worth a visit. There are many highlights and many beautiful old houses to see there, especially in the old town, as well as on the Sande or in the Lüneburg water district from the Ilmenau (Stintmarkt, Alter Kran and much more).

Generations have built this building for more than 700 years. The north side of the town hall consists of many buildings lined up next to one another. The complex is 111 meters long and about 40 meters wide. It served the leading upper class as a meeting place, as a court seat, for administration and for representation. Today the town hall is one of the largest and most important in Germany.

A carillon with 41 bells made of Meissen porcelain hangs in the town hall tower and plays melodies by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz every day. The composer of "The Moon Has Risen" was a son of the city. The town hall itself, one of the most important in northern Germany, is now largely a museum. Almost all year round there are guided tours of the rooms, which were created in different eras, several times a day.

The smelt market is located in the historic water district of Lüneburg. As the name suggests, the fish species "smelt", a small herring-like fish that was very popular in the Middle Ages, used to be traded here.
