If you cross the old Jeetzel River, you'll get to the other side. It's okay to walk, but I'd prefer to drive a bit further, where you can easily cross over a road bridge.

I grew up in Hitzacker and in my time up until 1969, the old town hall was in the old half-timbered building to the left of the ice cream parlor on the market square. The post office was downstairs and the town administration was upstairs. I always had to pay the annual dog tax there. But then in 1973 I moved from Hitzacker to the wide world for work - it's possible that the town administration had to move due to lack of space.

The Lüchower Landgraben and Grenzgraben lowlands separate Wendland from the Altmark in the south. Geographically, western Wendland represents the eastern edge of the Lüneburg Heath, which was shaped during the Saale Ice Age, and is partly part of the Ostheide. The Drawehn mountain range, which is also known as the east Hanoverian gravel end moraine, determines the landscape there. It is a sandy geest that has been reforested with pine trees. With infertile soil and lack of water due to the permeable soil, it has always been unfriendly to settlement throughout its history. The largest part of the Hanoverian Wendland lies in the glacial valley of the Elbe. A distinction is made between the actual Elbtalaue in the north and the Lüchower lowlands. The latter is a lower terrace, which is traversed by numerous watercourses - the largest being the Jeetzel -, canals and ditches. Heights are formed by small, island-like ground moraines such as Öring, Lemgow, Langendorfer Geestinsel and Höhbeck. In the east there is the Gartower Forest on a large shifting sand plain.

Hitzacker's old town (on the town island) lies between the Jeetzel and Elbe rivers and is always worth a visit. There are some pretty, old half-timbered houses to see here. You can get a wonderful view of the town island and the Elbe from the vineyard, which is on the opposite (western) side of the Jeetzel from the old town. On the northern side of the town island there is a flood protection wall, behind which lies Hitzacker's marina and meadows about 120-150 meters wide, behind which the Elbe flows.
