Winegrowing in the Ortenau region is closely intertwined with the history of Staufenberg Castle – as is that of the noble Margrave of Baden. The castle was built in the 11th century by the famous ducal house of the Zähringen, the ancestors of today's Margraves of Baden – making it a proud age of almost 1,000 years. The castle's name is derived from "Stauf," which in Old High German means "conical mountain." An apt description of the over 380-meter-high Staufenberg. The earliest reference to winegrowing dates back to 1366. In 1693, Ludwig Wilhelm, Margrave of Baden, the "Turkish Louis" and godson of the Sun King, was able to reacquire the castle. In 1832, it was converted into a "romantic" castle in keeping with contemporary tastes, and visitors can still find this "romanticism" today.

For anyone interested in the background, I have heard the story about the pile of stones that it dates back to a time when agriculture was practiced on the heights. The stones were collected from the fields and piled up. This particular pile of stones became a prominent waypoint and was named in reference to Absalom's tomb near Jerusalem. I was told by someone else that a cyclist once died there in a competition and that stones have been placed there in remembrance ever since. I don't have reliable sources for either, but given the size of the stones, the first story seems more plausible to me.

The castle has always been a centre of wine-growing, which is evident from the first glance at the castle from a distance. Surrounded by vineyards on all sides, it sits high on its rock. A beautiful sight.
