10月 3, 2023, Tilly Oak
On the Hellberg there is (or was) an approximately 300-year-old oak tree known as the “Tilly oak tree”. According to local tradition, the tree is intended to commemorate the military leader of the Catholic League, Count Tilly.

11月 15, 2021, Hengstberg Summit Cross
“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to erect“ their ”cross at this point. (...) These crossroads were erected as visible signs and attract the looks of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who overcame death (...). The cross is part of our life, just as it was part of the life of Jesus. So I hope that many people ... visit the crossroads, whether as places of silence and breathing before God, whether as places of congregation meeting, prayer and praise of God. " (Text source: Dean Rainald M. Ollig in: “Crossroads. Small sacred monuments as a sign of popular piety ")

9月 10, 2021, Ruins of Alte Gleichen Castle
If you have already reached the top, you should definitely visit BOTH summits. On the "Alte Gleichen" you can see a little more of the former castle. For this you have benches and a shelter to rest on the "Neue Gleichen". From both peaks there are vantage points down to the valley.

6月 16, 2021, Hengstberg Summit Cross
The climb is unusually steep. Should not be able to be done on a wet surface. But it's also fascinating, adventurous and fun. Once at the top there is a really special surprise waiting for this area! :-)

The steep ascent to the Hengstberg is rewarded with a schnapps that is available at the summit cross. There is also a summit book. It is essential to enter :-)

3月 3, 2021, Ruins of Alte Gleichen Castle
The entire area here had a remarkable skyline in the Middle Ages. The copper engravings by Merian give a rough impression of this. These often offer the only image documentation. Not only were these two castles interesting landmarks, there were several others within sight. A castle complex existed in Reinhausen (at least until 1100 A.D.). In the northeast there was also a considerable castle on the Kronenberg and probably also on the Rohrberg to the south. The Rusteberg also had a large castle complex.

There used to be an observation tower here, similar to the Harz view tower to the north, which did not exist at the time. The tower had to give way to the small Bundeswehr base, whose buildings and fences with parts of a light barrier cannot be overlooked here. A small mobile radar system was stationed here near the border. The Göttingen Forestry Office later took over this property. A city forest office manager devoted himself to his vintage car handicrafts. A few meters to the north is a small refuge that is interesting for hikers or groups of hikers. Several photos reflect this well.

The Tilly Oak is a place of memory of Count von Tilly, a military leader of the Catholic League and the imperial troops in the Thirty Years War. In pursuit of the Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, his soldiers pitched their camp on June 20, 1623 in the forest near Obernfeld. The only reminder of the oak from back then is a tree torso, in which a new, young oak is now growing.

Here is a wonderful place with a resting place at any time of the day and in any weather. The observation tower used to be a few meters south of the hut. He had to give way to the halls that were built for a radar base for the Bundeswehr. The city forestry office later took over the property.

7月 4, 2020, Nördliches Meridianzeichen bei Groß Schneen
Many people in the region are certainly familiar with the southern meridian sign near Groß Schneen. It was used to calibrate the quadrants in the old Gauss observatory. For a precise understanding of celestial mechanics, it was essential to measure the angles of selected celestial bodies at their upper culmination point. Little is known that there was also a northern meridian sign, as it was dismantled. A small vacant lot in the field testified to its existence for a long time. The foundations are still underground. At some point the farmer who tilled the surrounding field also plowed the ground above the foundations. The small area is now used for agriculture.

5月 13, 2020, Ruins of Alte Gleichen Castle
The two twin mountains are called Alte Gleichen (432 m; southern mountain) and Neue Gleichen (428 m; northern mountain). They used to be the location of two castle complexes, the Gleichenburgen, and are the namesake of the Gleichen community. Remains are only left on the old like mountain.
