The Göttingen Kiessee is a 15-hectare lake on the southwestern outskirts of the city. Formed by gravel mining, it has become one of Göttingen's most important recreational areas. The approximately 2.5-kilometer-long lakeside path is popular with joggers, walkers, and anglers throughout the year. The lake is only one to two meters deep and, as a result, is threatened by algal blooms and accelerated silting. To improve the freshwater supply, an inlet was built in 2003 to divert water from the Leine River, which flows east of the lake, into the lake. From an ecological perspective, however, this measure is completely pointless, as intensive agriculture in the Leine catchment area washes large quantities of fertilizer into the river, and these nutrients further accelerate the silting of the Kiessee. Trips through the Leienauen and the Kiesse area offer interesting things in every season. Migrating and resident waterfowl can often be observed. Considerable cormorant colony.

The Wendebach reservoir is a natural lake that was created in 1973 by artificial damming for flood protection. The area is used as a recreation area. The bathing area has a bathing jetty and a non-swimmer area, which is looked after by the DLRG.

The path around the Kiessee is beautiful and easy to walk on. There were a lot of people out and about on Sunday afternoon.

A great swimming lake including a small restaurant. Great place for a break or as a destination for a tour to have a cool drink at the end. The “Taverne am See” restaurant is only open in summer. On Fridays there are some canoes, kayaks and sailing boats out and about.

Due to its proximity to the village of Rosdorf, which is a few hundred meters away, the lake is known under the name "Rosdorfer Baggersee", but it is located in the municipality of Friedland and belongs to the Niedernjesa district there. The term “Kiessee” is usually avoided for this lake, as this term already refers to the Göttingen Kiessee in the south of the city, which is also close to the border with Rosdorf. The lake was created in 1969 in the course of gravel mining.
