The navigable Werbellin Canal connects the Werbellinsee with the Oder-Havel Canal and the Finow Canal. As early as 1609, the Werbellinsee was tapped via the Nettelgraben to feed the first Finow Canal. The expansion into the Werbellin Canal took place in 1765 in order to improve the water supply to the second Finow Canal, which was completed in 1746. The withdrawal of water resulted in a drop in the water level in Lake Werbellin.
