The long-distance hiking trail leads from Meiningen in the Werra Valley over the Gleichberge and Haßberge, through the Main Valley and the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund with the destination in Bad Windsheim. The trail is marked with the symbol of a bird's head brooch (a garment clasp). The trail connects the sites of prehistoric Celtic settlement, such as the Kleiner Gleichberg / Steinsburg.

With a dominance of almost 20 kilometers and a prominence of almost 300 meters, the Großer Gleichberg is one of the most sublime mountains in Thuringia and for that reason alone it is worth a visit. The surrounding towns are: Zellfeld in the northeast, Roth in the east, Simmershausen and Gleicherwiesen in the southeast, Gleichamberg in the south, Hindfeld and Milz in the southwest, Römhild in the west, and Haina in the northwest

The climb up to the plateau is strenuous, but the view from above makes up for the effort. You can look towards Franconia (Bavaria) or towards Kleiner Gleichberg (Thuringia). This is where the viewpoints get their name from.

This former Premonstratensian monastery, now a proud community in the Hildburghausen district, tells of a rich past. It is a clear morning in September when I catch my first glimpse of the monastery on my bike along the Werratal cycle path. After a fairly steep stretch, the view opens up of the Veßra monastery complex with its Romanesque monastery church of St. Marien. A sight that immediately makes you forget the effort of the climb. The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra, an open-air museum for regional history and folklore, makes history tangible. The monastery complex is a beautiful composition of ruins that whisper stories from times past. The St. Marin collegiate church ruins, once built in the 12th century and unfortunately accidentally burned down in 1939, now stand as a silent witness to past splendor. Visiting the monastery is like traveling through time. Here you can marvel at the half-timbered ensemble, the monastery area with domain buildings and historical agricultural technology. It is a place where you can feel the connection to the past while strolling through the preserved buildings such as the Gate Chapel or the rest of the cloisters. The museum offers a variety of events - garden parties, concerts and more that celebrate Thuringia's cultural heritage. The excursion is rounded off by the small café, where you can take a well-deserved break and let the impressions sink in.
