In the region, the station is sometimes referred to as Ilmenau main station because of its greater importance compared to the other stations, although it never officially bore this suffix.

The municipality of Wolfsberg was founded in 1994 and consisted of the districts of Bücheloh, Grätinau-Angstedt and Wümbach. The name Wolfsberg was derived from the mountain of the same name, at the foot of which all three towns lie. As part of the regional reform, the towns were dissolved and incorporated into the city of Ilmenau in 2018.
