The mocking nickname "Hankel" for Herrstein's residents derives from the formerly common first name Johann-Karl, which was shortened to Hankel. While the people of Herrstein associate the term with self-confident and educated citizens, neighboring communities view it critically, which is also reflected in the "Hankel Fountain": An adult figure depicted as "Hankel" is being teased by a boy and splashed with water.

The special thing about this castle is that it actually had two outer baileys. The western and the eastern outer bailey. In the area of the former western outer bailey there is now a war memorial.
