The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1265. Today it is privately owned and has therefore been called "Purpers Schlösschen" for many decades. You can visit it as part of the "Day of the Open Monument" on September 12 of each year. The Allenbach Church is also in the immediate vicinity. Information about the castle and the church can be found on the information boards.

A beautiful ruin, which shows the enormous extent of the former castle and also makes the floor plan easy to understand. And the all-round view of the valleys is also worth seeing

The heirs of Sponheim, the Margrave of Baden and the Count Palatine of Zweibrücken built today's castle from the quartzites, greywacke and sandstones of the castle. The sandstone walls of the castle windows date from the 12th to 13th centuries. Allenbach Castle is now a listed building. The fact that the substance of the building was preserved after the French revolutionary troops marched in is primarily due to the last Allenbacher hut owner, Johann Mathias Sauermilch and his son Rudolf. Sauermilch not only acquired the huts, but also lived in the castle and set up a line weaving mill there to offset the lower profits from copper smelting. Rudolf Sauermilch died on February 7th, 1871 in Allenbach. The castle was rented and finally acquired in 1898 by the Idar merchant Max Purper. He and his children preserved the building from the outside and enriched its interior. The castle was used by the Max Purper family as a residence during the summer holidays. During the last world war the castle was occupied by a bakery company, which caused great damage. In 1957, Max Purper was recognized as a historical monument for the castle. There are guided tours in the castle on the open day. Allenbach Castle is the only inhabitable castle from the Middle Ages in the Hunsrück, along with Eltz Castle and Gemünden Castle.
