Great castle ruins. You can easily imagine how large and impressive this building once was. There is nice seating and views.

Unfortunately everything was in the fog today, but the castle is worth a visit and we'll be back again

The Rheingrafenstein is a 136 m high porphyry rock formation on the Nahe opposite Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. It belongs geologically to the Kreuznach massif. At its peak are the ruins of Rheingrafenstein Castle, which was built in the 11th century and destroyed in 1688 during the Palatinate War of Succession. The Rheingrafenstein is the landmark of the Bad Kreuznach district of Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. A little below are the ruins of the Affenstein castle. A 200 hectare area around the rock formation was declared a nature reserve in 1985. Coming from Bad Münster am Stein, you can reach the Rheingrafenstein via a footpath after crossing the Nahe with a hand-pulled passenger ferry. Alternatively, there is the possibility of following the Rheingrafenstraße via Bad Kreuznach, driving to a nearby car park and hiking to the castle and viewing platform. Source: Wikipedia

Very nice ruin. Worth visiting the castle. We have linked the system with our tour on Lemberg.

The ascent pulls a bit in the calves, but it's definitely worth it. Beautiful castle ruins to discover, especially in the evening in the light of the setting sun. There is a viewing platform and even a long table with benches for a rest.

Basically you should wear sturdy shoes. The path is not suitable for prams or people with walking disabilities. The view from the viewing platform, however, compensates for any effort of the ascent. Certainly also a highlight for enjoying sunsets - if necessary, pack a delicious drop of Nahe wine in your backpack ;)

The castle was built around 1240 to monitor a nearby military road by the Counts of Veldenz, who appointed Eberhard von Lautern as a lieutenant. Until 1432 the castle remained in the possession of the von Lautern family, who from 1247 had been called "von Montfort". In the 15th century, the residents of the Ganerbeburg were sometimes robber barons. In 1456 the troops of the Archbishop of Mainz Diether von Mainz and the Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate conquered the castle complex and destroyed it. In 1480, Simon Boos von Waldeck received the castle as an inheritance, with permission to rebuild it. The Boos von Waldeck family, from the Waldeck Castle of the same name in the Hunsrück region, had been part of Montfort Castle since the end of the 14th century. Although there are some signs of a reconstruction of one of the residential towers, Montfort remained in ruins for many centuries. For many years the ruin was divided between four private forest owners and local residents. According to certain safety-related requirements of the supervisory authority, the Bad Kreuznach district took over the ruins in 1969, had them secured and renovated. Today you can visit the castle ruins of Montfort free of charge. The Rheingrafenstein ruins are located above the Nahe and Huttental valleys. Highly recommended and with a fantastic view of the Nahe valley.

Wonderful castle ruins that can be reached from two sides on foot, by bike or by car. Unfortunately, from above you hardly have a real view, as there are large areas of forest around it, but the castle is still worth a trip due to the walls and the beautiful area. In addition, many festivals and events are held there (if no Corona prevents this). In the video at 15: 34-18: 47 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rwy6uw3mmcw
