9月 2, 2021, Rossel Ruins
The Rossel, an artificial ruin, is located on the western boundary between Rüdesheim am Rhein and its district of Assmannshausen in the Hessian Rheingau-Taunus district and is now a destination in the Niederwald landscape park with a view of the opposite mouth of the Nahe into the Rhine and the Binger Hole. At their feet, about 400 meters to the south, are the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle and, on a small offshore island in the Rhine, the Bingen Mouse Tower. The Rossel is about a 20-minute walk from the Niederwald Monument and a 10-minute walk from the Niederwald hunting lodge. Count Johann Friedrich Karl Maximilian von Ostein had the artificial ruins built in 1774 as part of the transformation of the Niederwald into a landscape park for his guests. It was named after a pile of Taunus quartzite rubble of the same name in its immediate vicinity. The Rossel consists of a square main tower about 5 meters wide with a small terrace to the south facing the Rhine and a small stair tower to the north-west. The ruins built from field stones are decorated with castle elements. The Rossel is surrounded by several vantage points, such as the Naheblick (east) and the Knights' Hall (northwest) and the so-called magic cave (north), an artificial cave about 60 meters long. 5月 26, 2021, Burg Ehrenfels Ruins
The majestic Ehrenfels Castle is located directly on the slope of the Niederwald forest. It was probably built in 1211 and has watched over the Rhine ever since. Although the castle is "only" a ruin, it is still impressive and can be viewed from the outside.

The ruins of the former Zollburg Ehrenfels are wonderfully exposed on the steep slope above the knee of the Rhine. The narrow bend in the river at the entrance to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO cultural heritage site was predestined to raise road tolls in the Middle Ages. At that time the customs station was in connection with the Binger mouse tower in the middle of the river. From here you have a breathtaking view of the Rhine and the nearby estuary opposite. Incidentally, the sun-drenched slope is one of the best wine-growing locations in Germany. Make sure you bring enough water with you on hot days, because the slope heats up a lot and there is hardly any shade. The gradients on the surrounding gravel roads are not to be underestimated.

11月 16, 2020, Rheingrafenstein Castle Ruins
Basically you should wear sturdy shoes. The path is not suitable for prams or people with walking disabilities. The view from the viewing platform, however, compensates for any effort of the ascent. Certainly also a highlight for enjoying sunsets - if necessary, pack a delicious drop of Nahe wine in your backpack ;)

The Rossel lies above the Rhine curve and the Binger Loch. On the opposite side you can see Bingen and Bingerbrück and the Nahe estuary on the left. Directly opposite or to the right are the Hartberg with Teufelsfels and the Rheinberg with the Damianskopf, as well as the steep Kreuzbach valley in between. Above the Nahe estuary you can see further into Rheinhessen. Below the Rossel you can see the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle and the Mouse Tower on a small island on the Rhine.

you have to hike one floor down to get to the castle ruins. We are not allowed into the castle either, but a beautiful Sleeping Beauty Castle from the outside.
