The small hut was built in 1899 and is now operated by the Swabian Alb Association. It is the highest located hikers' home in the Albverein. However, it is also the simplest of all the hiking homes. Electricity and water have not yet reached the hut. The location below the top of the Lochenstein is extraordinarily beautiful. Above a wonderful mountain meadow, you can look across it to the heights of the Großer Heuberg and sometimes as far as the Alps. From the Lochenstein itself (just a little above the hut) there is a broad view of the foothills of the Alb and across to the central and northern Black Forest. The Balinger Mountains with Hörnle, Lochenstein, Schafberg and Plettenberg show steep falls and have a bit of a high mountain character.
