According to Roman coin finds discovered in the 1970s, Heidelsburg Castle was built at the latest between the 2nd century AD (Emperor Hadrian) and 351 AD (Germanic invasions). However, based on the location and shape of the complex, as well as a Gallic coin find, historians consider it possible that a predecessor building dates back to Celts and dates back to as early as 100 BC.
