Bischofsgrün is, so to speak, the "heart" of the Fichtel Mountains – a state-recognized health resort nestled in the valley between the two highest peaks in Northern Bavaria, the Ochsenkopf (1024 m) and the Schneeberg (1051 m). Bischofsgrün is the ideal starting point for almost any outdoor activity: The modern Ochsenkopf North Cable Car takes you to the summit year-round. In summer, the Alpine Coaster (a year-round toboggan run), the climbing park, and downhill trails beckon. In winter, the town is a hotspot for downhill and cross-country skiing. The region boasts a vast network of hiking trails, including the famous Franconian Mountain Trail.

Always nice to drive through here, there is a lot to discover

One of the most romantic branch lines in the Fichtel Mountains ran from Neuenmarkt via Himmelkron to Bad Berneck until 1993, ending in Bischofsgrün. In the 1970s, traffic increasingly shifted to the road, so that passenger transport was discontinued in May 1974. Nevertheless, the line was retained for freight traffic, as companies such as Frenzelit or the Küfner hard stone works, which produced railway ballast, regularly required freight trains. But here too, transport increasingly shifted to the road in the early 1990s. When a section of the railway embankment in the area between Blumenau and Lanzendorf slipped as a result of a thunderstorm in July 1992, this was a welcome opportunity to officially close the line to Bad Berneck on December 31, 1993.

The municipality of Bischofsgrün, located in the Fichtelgebirge in the district of Bayreuth, has a special tradition. Every year since 1985, volunteers have built a snowman several meters high in the village market square at the beginning of February. It starts on February 17th this year so that it will be ready in time for the February 20th Snowman Festival.
