The oldest part of the building, the Knights' Hall between the two mighty towers, which has been preserved as a ruin, dates from 1335. The lower parts date from the 13th to 14th centuries, the late Gothic cell vaults in the upper floors date from around 1530, the gable tops and roof turrets were added towards the end of the 16th century. In the 15th to 16th centuries the castle was rebuilt as a palace and the north wing was rebuilt in 1890 after a fire. The gatehouse to the front courtyard was built around 1560 and decorated with dormer windows and gables. The palace forms a closed square with late Gothic and Renaissance architectural forms, the wing on the Elbe side, built around 1530 for Otto Pflugk, has a late Gothic brick gable with tracery pattern, the stair towers in the courtyard have Renaissance gables. The cell-vaulted "drinking room" in the southwest tower was decorated with rich paintings in 1532, which are attributed to the circle around Lucas Cranach. From April 2024, the castle cafe will be open every Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Hiking tour around the Tiefenauer ponds, about 6 km, highly recommended for beginners. It's a good walk, you can watch swans, everything is very natural and not crowded. Picnic at the rose garden. The route was easy for my 13-year-old mixed breed dog to manage. Afterwards, coffee in the castle, unfortunately the cake was already gone by about 3:30 p.m. But alternatively we went to the ice cream parlor in Gröditz. Sweet ending!

Castle park is currently closed due to renovation

The castle is currently being extensively renovated. Part of the castle is a beautiful rose garden. The castle cafe only opens on Sundays between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Lampertswalde Castle is a former manor with a large castle park. This was given away to the Güldenstern monastery in 1240 by Bodo and Odo von Ilburg. This was also the first documented mention. After the monastery was secularized in the 16th century, the Electors of Saxony came into possession. The Thirty Years' War caused great destruction, but the buildings were able to be rebuilt. In 1760, Frederick the Great stayed at the castle for one night. The castle was on a small island and two remaining bridges led to it. In front of the castle, four life-sized sandstone statues from around 1780 represented the four seasons. They were moved here from the Leuben Castle Park in 1894. Unfortunately, the main cornice of the house was damaged in a fire in 1826 and the gable, which rose above the central projection, was subsequently removed. The anteroom received a support in the middle. After the end of the Second World War, the entire complex was supposed to be blown up, but this was prevented. In 1946 the first central school in Saxony was set up. In 1948, the intact moated castle was demolished to extract building materials in accordance with Order 209 of the Supreme Chief of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany, Vasily Danilovich Sokolowsky. After 1990, the inspector's house, the gardener's house and the palm house were restored or rebuilt.
