The Küstenkanal Significance The Küstenkanal in northern Emsland is a through waterway between the Weser and Ems. It was built between 1921 and 1935 through an extensive raised bog area that lay between the Hunte and the Ems. The construction of the canal made it possible to drain, cultivate, develop and settle this area. Even today, the Küstenkanal is the main receiving water for this area. Route description The Küstenkanal begins near Oldenburg and runs in an east-west direction until it joins the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Dörpen (DEK km 202.55). Ships coming from the ports on the Lower Weser travel along the 25 km long Untere Hunte to Oldenburg and from there continue on the Küstenkanal to the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The Küstenkanal - as an important link in the West German canal network - enables the seaports on the Weser to access the inland and seaports on the Ems, the Rhine-Ruhr area and further to the ARA ports.
