 Steinknückl Mountain in the Spessart in Bavaria The Steinknückl, also known as the Steinknückel, is a 417-metre-high hill in the Spessart.[1] The wooded mountain is located in the Bavarian district of Aschaffenburg, directly on hiking trail 31 of the Spessart Association. It is located in the Weilerwald forest, about 1.7 km south of Laufach and about 2 km north of Waldaschaff. The Steinknückl is known for its strikingly tall holm oaks on the summit, which give it its name. Since there is a summit book on the top of the mountain, it is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers.

In 1952 it was still believed that the ring wall indicates a Celtic settlement. Excavations in 2005 showed, however, that the techniques used to erect the ring wall could not come from the Celts, but rather from the time AD 1000/1100. are assigned. This dating is also proven by the finds of ceramic shards and glass beads. According to the best possible knowledge today, the facility was a refuge and fortified castle for the local population. If there was a danger of passing hordes or warlike people, then cattle and people could be brought into protection behind the wall on the hilltop. If necessary, you could have defended yourself here. Archaeologists assume, however, that the refugee and fortified castle was rarely used.
