History In prehistoric and early historical times, the Weser flowed from the present-day district of Gröpelingen in a more northerly direction towards the Osterholzer Geest, before turning west at its foot. Large parts of today's Lesum course are therefore former Weser courses. A 31 cm high, 800 g heavy Bronze Age crest helmet made of bronze (now in the Focke Museum) was recovered from the Lesum. To protect the Lesum crossing, there was a castle belonging to Bremen on the south bank near the village of Grambke, first mentioned in 1277. In 1388, the city built a road connection from there to the edge of the Geest in the north with a bridge over the river and an adjoining dam. This is where the names of the district of Burg-Grambke (south bank), the district of Burgdamm (north bank), the district of Burglesum (both river banks) and the Bremen-Burg train station (in Burgdamm with branching of the line to Bremerhaven and Bremen-Vegesack) come from.
