As early as the Middle Ages, the network of canals favored the establishment of craft businesses and mills. THE VAUBAN BARRIER AND THE PONTS COUVERTS - MILITARY BUILDINGS In order to defend the quarter from the outside, four massive towers were built and connected by bridges over the Ill. The bridges were covered with wooden roofs to protect the soldiers from the cold and rain. In 1686, Vauban, Louis XIV's master builder of fortifications, considered this defense system obsolete and had the weir named after him built to prevent any attack from the water.
