The first castle complex was built around 900 on the site of a former Slavic settlement. It probably served as an outpost of the royal palace of Dornburg. Renovations and extensions took place in the following centuries. The outer walls visible today, with their four towers, date from the 16th century.

The Stadtkirche St. Johannes dates back to the late Gothic period, the interior, completely renovated between 1754 and 1756, houses a mirrored ceiling supported by marble columns, as well as an ancient taufstein from the 17th century.
