The first castle complex was built around 900 on the site of a former Slavic settlement. It probably served as an outpost of the royal palace of Dornburg. Renovations and extensions took place in the following centuries. The outer walls visible today, with their four towers, date from the 16th century.

Definitely worth a detour if you're in the area. On our checkpoint tour, we had to climb up to the castle after 200 km, which was quite a challenge. Highly recommended!

The sun terrace doesn't offer much space. If you do manage to find a seat, you can truly enjoy the beautiful sunshine with a view of the Saale Valley. The spot is located outside the entrance fee-based area of the castle complex.
