This gray, age-old ruin is called "Mauerschädel," meaning "uninhabitable ruin." The people's imagination has always been preoccupied with this ruin, and in 1891, the blind legend collector Chr. Ludwig Wucke recorded the following legend: Filke was once a large town, stretching from Oberfilke to the now-vanished old St. Peter's Church and the village of Willmars. It was crossed by three streams and had over 300 bakers and the first Christian church in the area. The bishop baptized the pagans there. Its remains form the "Mauerschädel." Indeed, the legend is supported by the fact that a large number of now-vanished settlements once existed in the area around Filke. The ruin lies directly on the border between Thuringia and Bavaria.

Mauerschädel (Skull of the Wall). A medieval remnant of the village of Bischofs. An open-air service is held there every year. The atmosphere is fantastic, beside the Schmerbach stream. Friedhelm Korell's bratwurst and Erich Hofmann's roasted pork roasts are absolute favorites. It's practically an insider tip!

The Gaden (forts) surrounding the church in Oberstreu are a gem that transports the viewer to another world. Even though the current ensemble is smaller than it was in its heyday, it still gives an idea of how the fortifications once protected the Oberstreu residents from enemies and how life in the village was then. According to an information panel at the Gaden (forts), after the village was relocated in the 11th and 12th centuries, a tower, a small church, and a cemetery emerged from the flood-prone Streu lowlands. Initially, these were only enclosed by a wall. However, the walls were soon raised, and storehouses, known as Gaden (forts), were added from the inside. The term comes from Old High German and means something like "parlor" or "chamber." The defensive power of the complex was increased by the church tower and a defensive tower in the northern row of Gaden (forts). Unfortunately, the complex was destroyed in 1553 during the so-called Margrave War. However, the stone portals on the doors, dating from 1557 to 1591, show that the Gaden were rebuilt after the war. At the latest, they had cellars underneath. (info MainPost)

A beautiful place, even if you have a view. There was a ladder leaning against the tower, but it was too risky for me to use it.

This is a really large and really well-maintained ruin. The climb is short and sweet from Henneberg. There is also a path around the complex. It is definitely worth a walk

The Mauerschädel is an early medieval structure. It is a tiny fortified church fortress, of which only remnants remain. The Hochrhöner Extratour "Willmarser" passes by there. A covered seating area invites you to take a rest.

The Stockheimer Warte stands at the summit of the Turmberg in the middle of a deciduous forest in the Stockheim district between Völkershausen in the north and Stockheim in the south. There is a steep slope to the north and west, and the mountain ridge to the south. The tower dates from the 15th century. The tower, like the other towers around Mellrichstadt and Ostheim, is said to have been built against Würzburg by Abbot Henry VI, Prince Abbot of Fulda from 1315 to 1353. However, since other towers exist or existed, it is more likely that there is a transmission line. The towers are also said to have been connected to the Lichtenburg, although this can no longer be proven today. The tower is a round tower approximately nine meters high with a high entrance at a height of four to five meters. Like most other watchtowers in the Rhön, it was built from field stones. Its entrance does not face directly towards the village, but is slightly offset following the flat slope. A setting of stones in the shape of a staircase can still be seen. Unlike other towers in the area, the Stockheimer Warte has never been made accessible again and a staircase that may have existed before has been removed. In the direction of Völkerhausen, a cut over a meter deep can be seen in the crown. There are many traditional folk items about the tower on the mountain. Wikipedia

The Mauerschädel ruins are the ruins of a fortified church in the Rhön, located in the Rhön-Grabfeld district. The Mauerschädel church ruins are located in a gentle valley directly next to the village of Filke, a district of the municipality of Willmars. The ruins are located directly on the state border between Thuringia and Bavaria. Around the year 770 there is the first documented mention of a place called “Biscofestat” (bishop's town? - with supposedly over 300 bakers), to which the Mauerschädel church ruins are said to have originally belonged. A certain Adelher donated these estates to the Fulda monastery. In this context there were two other disappeared communities, “Solzach” and “Hoitino”. Remains of the tower of the Mauerschädel ruins The church is believed to have been built around the year 1000. The village of Bischofs is said to have still existed in 1334 - a hundred years later it was described as “desolate”. According to legend, invading Huns destroyed Bishop's village and caused a massacre among the Christians. The town of Filke was mentioned for the first time in 1458 – “Zum Bischof in der Filken”. During investigations in 1903 it was said that the ruins were not - as assumed - the remains of a women's monastery, but the church of the former bishop's town. The church's courtyards can still be seen in the ruins today. The inner-German border originally ran between the chancel and the nave. In the 1970s, the entire ruin was assigned to the Free State of Bavaria and thus the Federal Republic by the German-German Border Commission. Wikipedia
