The effort of the climb, whether on foot or by bike, is rewarded by the magnificent view. The ruins of the summit castle lie on the summit of the 524 m high Stoppelsberg in the Kuppenrhön, the remnant of a volcanic vent formed in the Miocene. The keep of Hauneck Castle is founded on hexagonal basalt columns that formed when the lava cooled; they are exposed at the base of the keep. At 480.5 m above sea level, the Stellerskuppe is the highest elevation in the Bad Hersfeld area. From 1935 to 1948 there was a wooden observation tower here. Some of the foundation remains can still be discovered and an information board shows historical photos.

The predecessors were all wooden towers and not very high due to the low forest cover at the time. The first tower (1895) was 8 meters high. The second (1955) was a bit higher at 13.50 meters. The tower, built in 2004, is 25m high.

At 630m, the Soisberg is the highest mountain in the Hessian skittles game. The striking mountain catches the eye even from afar. The 25m high lookout tower cannot be overlooked either. The extinct volcano is located near Soislieden in the Hessian districts of Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Fulda. 🌋🔭🗼

Encouraged by fbn, I finally went to the Soisbergturm on my way to the Rhön! What can I say? Caught the first glimpse of the Wasserkuppe in glorious weather. I also really liked all the plaques from the supporters, without whom the new tower would not have been possible.
