Bloemersheim Castle (pronounced with a long "e") is a moated castle near Neukirchen-Vluyn, one of the most impressive castles in the Wesel district. Leyenburg Castle is located nearby. Dating from the late Middle Ages, the castle was acquired in 1802 by Friedrich Heinrich von der Leyen, a silk producer from Krefeld, from Friedrich August von Pelden (nicknamed Cloudt). It remains the ancestral seat of the Barons von der Leyen and the headquarters of an estate management company (with significant fruit sales and forestry operations). The castle (courtyard and gardens) is only open to the public during rare cultural events, but the rear side, facing the castle pond, can be easily viewed from a popular cycle path.
