When you come up here on the granite pilgrimage path and don't know what to expect, you're amazed at the imposing building that suddenly stands in front of you.

Piberstein Castle is located in the district of Piberstein in the municipality of Helfenberg, near the village of Ahorn in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. Built in the 13th century, Piberstein Castle is in very good condition thanks to extensive restoration work. Here you can take a break, walk around the old walls and enjoy the view of the Mühlviertel.

From the former moated castle from the 16th and 17th centuries, only the massive gate tower and the arcades in the courtyard have been preserved in their original form. The castle was plundered by Soviet soldiers in 1945 and was occupied by Russian soldiers until 1953. Due to the severe damage, the building had to be completely renovated. It was rebuilt and has been a retirement home since 1959.

The buildings are quite nondescript for a castle, but the garden with its artistically trimmed bushes and trees is worth a photo.

In the castle there is a small church where mass is held every Thursday and Sunday. In addition, the beautiful ambience in the castle courtyard is often used for weddings.

Sprinzenstein Castle is a palace complex in Upper Austria. It is located near the town of Sarleinsbach in the Mühlviertel. The original castle was built in the 13th century and after a fire 1583 extended to a Renaissance palace. Today it is privately owned.
